Terms of use

Plain-English terms.

These are the rules for using the Safe for humansapp and website. We’ve kept them short, with legal language only where it’s needed.

Agreement

By downloading, installing, or using the Safe for humansiOS app (the “App”) or the website at safeforhumans.app (together, the “Service”), you agree to these Terms of Use. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service. These terms are a binding agreement between you and the operator of Safe for humans.

What the Service does

Safe for humanslets you search or scan food and consumer products and shows you which ingredients are flagged by regulators and retailers (such as the EU, the UK Food Standards Agency, Whole Foods, and the EWG), along with the source text behind each flag. Some features use AI — including photo and barcode analysis powered by Google’s Gemini models — to identify products and summarize ingredient information.

Not medical, health, or safety advice

Safe for humans is an informational tool, not a substitute for professional advice. Ingredient flags reflect the opinions and rules of third parties and do not mean a product is unsafe, harmful, or unfit for you. Nothing in the Service is medical, nutritional, legal, or safety advice. Always read the actual product label, and consult a qualified professional (and your doctor for allergies or medical conditions) before making decisions about what you eat or use. You rely on the Service at your own risk.

Accuracy of information

Ingredient and product data comes from third-party and community sources that may be incomplete, out of date, or wrong, and AI analysis can make mistakes. We don’t guarantee that any product identification, ingredient list, flag, or recall information is accurate, complete, or current. When in doubt, trust the physical label over what the Service shows.

Subscriptions and payments

The App offers a free tier with a limited number of photo scans per day, and an optional auto-renewing subscription that unlocks additional usage.
  • Subscriptions are sold and processed by Apple through the App Store. The price and billing period are shown in the App at the time of purchase (currently $1.99 USD/month, which may vary by region and over time).
  • Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. Your subscription renews automatically for the same period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Your Apple Account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the period ends.
  • You can manage or cancel your subscription anytime in your Apple Account settings (Settings → your name → Subscriptions on iOS). Canceling stops future renewals; it does not refund the current period.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store Terms of Sale. We can't issue refunds directly.
  • Any unused portion of a free trial, if offered, is forfeited when you purchase a subscription.

Acceptable use

  • Use the Service only for lawful, personal, non-commercial purposes.
  • Don't scrape, bulk-download, resell, or build a competing dataset from our content.
  • Don't abuse, overload, reverse-engineer, or attempt to break, bypass, or disrupt the Service or its rate limits.
  • Don't upload unlawful content or images you don't have the right to share.
  • Don't use the Service to harass others or misrepresent product information.
We may suspend or limit access if you misuse the Service.

Your content

When you submit a photo, search query, or barcode, you give us permission to process it to provide the Service (including sending it to our backend and AI providers for analysis). We don’t claim ownership of your content. See our Privacy policy for how this data is handled.

Our content and brand

The Service, including its design, text, logos, and the way ingredient data is presented, is owned by us or our licensors and protected by intellectual-property laws. Underlying data may belong to its respective sources (for example, Open Food Facts under the ODbL). We grant you a limited, personal, revocable, non-transferable license to use the Service. You may not copy or reuse our branding without permission.

Third-party services and links

The Service relies on and links to third parties (Apple, Google Cloud, Open Food Facts, government databases, and others). We’re not responsible for their content, availability, or practices, and your use of them may be governed by their own terms.

Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don’t warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any information is accurate.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service or from reliance on any information it provides. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the claim (or, if you paid nothing, USD $50). Some jurisdictions don’t allow certain limitations, so some of these may not apply to you.

Apple App Store terms

The App is made available through the Apple App Store. These Terms are between you and us, not Apple, and Apple is not responsible for the App or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for the App. In the event the App fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price (if any); to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation. Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms and may enforce them against you. You confirm you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo and are not on any U.S. Government restricted-parties list, and you agree to comply with Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which also applies to your use of the App.

Changes to the Service and these terms

We may update, change, or discontinue features at any time. We may also update these Terms; when we make material changes we’ll update the date below and, for meaningful changes affecting existing users, surface a notice in the App. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the new Terms.

Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you violate these Terms or misuse the Service. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (such as disclaimers, limitation of liability, and the Apple terms) will continue to apply.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which the operator of Safe for humans is established, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Mandatory consumer-protection rights in your country of residence still apply.
